This harrowing 1945 drama by Roberto Rossellini centers on the Nazi occupation of Rome and the brave few who struggled against it. The film stars Aldo Fabrizi as a partisan priest and Anna Magnani in her breakthrough role as the fiancée of a resistance member. Conceived and directed amid the ruins of World War II, Rome Open City is a shockingly authentic experience, with war’s immediacy in every frame. A watershed in Italian cinema, with cinematography by Ubaldo Arata, this galvanic work garnered awards around the globe and planted the seeds of neorealism. Criterion Collection, 4K restoration.

Co-sponsored with Center for Applied Liberal Arts, School of Professional Studies; Grey Art Gallery. Co-presented by The Criterion Collection.
