Ramie Targoff is the Jehuda Reinharz Professor of the Humanities, Professor of English and Co-chair of Italian Studies at Brandeis University. Her research focuses on Renaissance literature, lyric poetry, the intersections of religion and literature, Shakespeare, and women’s writing in Renaissance Europe. She is the author of books on Renaissance Italian poetry, such as Renaissance Woman: The Life of Vittoria Colonna (Farrah, Straus and Giroux, 2018) and an edition with translation of Vittoria Colonna’s Rime of 1538: Poems of Widowhood: A Bilingual Edition of the 1538 Rime (Iter, 2021) published as part of The Other Voice in Early Modern Europe series. Targoff’s other titles include books on early modern English literature, such as Posthumous Love: Eros and the Afterlife in Renaissance England (University of Chicago Press, 2014) and, most recently, Shakespeare’s Sisters: How Women Wrote the Renaissance (Knopf, 2024).

The John Freccero Lecture Series, co-sponsored and co-organized by NYU’s Department of Italian Studies and Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò, honors the memory of Professor John Freccero, one of the most influential figures in the field of Italian Studies. A world-renowned scholar of Dante, among other subjects, Professor Freccero, after teaching at Johns Hopkins University, Cornell University, Yale University, and Stanford University, was Professor of Italian Studies at New York University from 1992 to 2015, where his intellectual and educational vision was instrumental in the founding and growth of our Department of Italian Studies.
