Child prodigy. Rebellious teenager. Romantic poet, philosopher, political thinker. Giacomo Leopardi was modernity’s first existentialist, a guiding light for the tumultuous years of the Italian Risorgimento, a cursed man who abused his art and his genius to the point of annihilation. Through the story of his friend Ranieri, we retrace the poet’s life from childhood to his escape from the oppressive family environment, to the clash with emergent liberal and ecclesiastical thought, through his tormented love for Countess Fanny Targioni Tozzetti and his illness, and on to his death.
