Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities
An Italian Perspective for a Changing World

Lectio Magistralis by
Elena Bonetti
Minister for Equal Opportunities and Family (Italy)

In her lecture, Minister Bonetti will offer an Italian perspective on the importance of equal opportunities and female empowerment in Europe. “Women are the fundamental lever of that Europe we want to be and build,” she recently stated during a summit at the European Commission. In many public speeches, Minister Bonetti has pointed out the importance of collectively bridging the gender gaps that undermine women’s full representation and participation in various development fields.

The lecture will be preceded by a 5:00 pm visit to the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, where on March 25, 1911, 123 women and girls died. Most of the victims were recent Italian or Jewish immigrants aged 14 to 23. The fire, the deadliest industrial disaster in the city’s history and one of the worst in US history, is considered a pivotal turning point for women’s rights in the United States.
