Please join us for a discussion and screening in celebration of the recent release of Stradella’s unjustly neglected oratorio Ester Liberatrice del Popolo Ebreo, composed 351 years ago and recorded last year in Padova by the Camerata Grimani under the direction of Jory Vinikour for Navona Records.

NYU Italian Department Chair Eugenio Refini and soprano, writer, and film director Jessica Gould will discuss the work and its history, exploring the themes of female empowerment, despotism, self determination, and self acceptance that make this chapter of the Hebrew Bible so startlingly resonant for today’s audiences.

The event featuring Refini and Gould, who co-wrote the liner notes, will include excerpts from the oratorio as well as screenings of Gould’s award-winning short promo films, which include footage made possible by unprecedented access to exquisite Renaissance locations and artifacts from the collection of the Museo Ebraico di Padova. CD’s, made possible in part by the generous support of NYU Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò, will be available for purchase.
